Creating LGBTQ+ Affirming Spaces for Youth
Presented by Joshua Gavel
Creating LGBTQ+ Affirming Spaces for Youth is a cultural competency workshop designed to help parents and caregivers deepen their understanding of LGBTQ+ identities and develop practical skills to support the health, well-being, and resilience of LGBTQ+ young people. The session addresses common assumptions about sexual orientation and gender identity, clarifies affirming terminology, and offers strategies for respectful communication, including pronoun use and gender-inclusive language. Through discussion of everyday challenges families may encounter, participants learn how to respond constructively to mistakes, reduce bias at home and in community settings, and advocate for inclusive practices that ensure safety and belonging. The workshop equips caregivers with tangible tools to foster supportive, affirming environments that nurture LGBTQ+ youth now and into the future.
